Day 7 - 27 April 2003

Tucumcari, NM to Albuquerque, NM - 174 miles

    Morning at the Blue Swallow
Breakfast at 8AM, Deans Restaurant on Tucumcari Boulevard and then on the road toward Albuquerque
At the gas station, the woman in the cashier booth told Paul an interesting Studebaker story. It seems that her fellow cashier lived next to an old recluse who died intestate. When they liquidated his estate they sold the entire contents of his house to this co-worker for $3,000. When he opened the garage he found a 1953 Studebaker (model not stated) with 36 miles on the odometer.

    On the road again...

Not much traffic on the road until later in the day
Started up the slow grades and at one point we were gaining 5 feet every 3 - 4 seconds. It would go up and down, but mostly up. I believe the altitude of ALQ is around 5000 feet.
The octane of the gas around here dropped to 86/88/90, since the height affects the performance. My car started stalling when coming to a stop at a light, so minor tweaks will have to be made

First Pit Stop at a scenic overlook. Everything here seems hilly right now
Gas prices in the high areas on the highway were also still at 1.79 for regular ...

Finally at the Comfort Inn in ALQ
We arrived in ALQ around 1PM and found the Comfort Inn quickly. It is on Central Avenue, which is old Route 66 and now a major thorofare through the city.

An afternoon snack in the Hotel Diner

A couple hours of maintenance and primping up the cars in preparation for the Zia Chapter members coming at 5PM for a Hospitality hour.

The Zia Chapter catches up with us later that afternoon

    Are we having fun?....yeahhh!

    Certainly!!!...

More of the Zia Chapter arrive

Paul Thrushes bed mounted Air Conditioner is a big hit

    And what they brought....

While approaching Albuquerque, on the Interstate, I spied something familiar. Off to the right was a 55 President Sedan, same color as mine, resting awkwardly on a flat tire, in the yardfront of a local. This will be the catalyst for an interesting meeting on the eastbound trip, a couple weeks hence.

That evening, we all went to the Cooperage for dinner. Three of our vehicles separated and got lost enroute, but finally got there. Had a nice dinner and a good time. We generally toasted the days progress and whatever was in store for us the next.
Tomorrow, some of us will visit the ' Old Town' and hunt trinkets. No one really has any room in their cars for large items.

Only problem we encountered today was, Pauls Avanti started to run rich and load up during the highway travel. He made it in ok, but coming back from dinner, it almost stalled, so tomorrow we have a free day to work on it.
