Day 11 - 1 May 2003

At the Grand Canyon National Park

A free day to roam the in the Grand Canyon National Park

Shuttle service every 15 minutes to strategic points along the rim

On the way we check out a few deer mooching in the area

Then visit with some of the pack mules, while waiting for the bus
No bus yet, so a short trek down the Mule trail

One of our tour drivers explained that when a new mule arrives, the training routine is to load it with large weighted boxes and let it walk down the trail, with a regular tour. It soon learns that besides contending with the load, the boxes will bump along the side of the canyon wall, if it stays close. To avoid the bumping, the mule will condition itself to walk as close to the trail edge as possible, perhaps giving the rider, some discomfort. The next picture shows evidence of this habit....
    Hazardous walking in some areas
<---- That's the edge about a foot away
....and then a 3000 foot drop..

The El Tovar Hotel was designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, chief architect and designer for the Fred Harvey Company from 1905 until her retirement in the 1950's. Colter is famous for her magnificent buildings at the Grand Canyon and many other locations in the Southwest.
