Day 21, Sunday, May 11, 2003

Gallup, NM to Tucumcari, NM - 313 miles

Gallup - Grants - Albuquerque - Edgewood - Moriarty - Santa Rosa - Cuervo - Newkirk - Tucumcari

Gallup is located about 6500 feet above sea level. While the afternoon sun may be a bit warm, not so in the AM. We woke up to 26 degrees and a slight breeze, but the humidity was only around 11%.

Back at the El Rancho at checkout

Looks like a dis-satisfied customer had that tent! ....

    Back on the road again....

A lot of neat rock formations

A stop in Albuquerque for lunch
DOT paints their highways Pink and blue...

We left the restaurant and crossed the street for gas, where we were, one by one, polled by a destitute Indian for money. Nice fellow, very chatty, but he wasn't the only one. Here comes a fellow in an old Honda, who has a thousand questions, about the 55 President. His tone was that of a car salesman, kind of loud and brash, wanting to know about value, options, etc....Why?, because he knows about the one parked on the westbound lanes of I-40 that I mentioned seeing on that leg. He seems genuinely interested in the cars and left ahead of us, but staying within sight. I guess he wanted to see them underway too
A lone route 66'er passes in a 58 Impala convertible

Remember when I said the trucks get close?
He's about 10 feet behind the car, doing 80

    More wide open spaces

    Bad Luck
Guess he had a "Hot Foot"

    Happy Hour in Tucumcari....
Always glad to use up those coupons

    Unloading at the motel

After the happy hour, we cleaned up and went to the restaurant. As usual, Dorothy was served last..... :-) She later got an award for this !

Following dinner, the mothers were surprised, with a cake that Paul had picked up at a supermarket down the street. Larry had suggested the cake and chipped in on it though it was embarrassingly inexpensive. The very nice waitress cut and served it for us. We surprised her with the last piece of cake for her (also a mother). Several other mothers were interrupted at dinner by sons and daughters calling to wish them a happy Mothers Day. Faye's children even arranged to have a flower arrangement at the motel when she checked in.
