Day 19 - 9 May 2003

Kingman, AZ to Winslow, AZ - 190 miles

Woke up to a fairly cool, clear morning. No after effects from the prior evening. There's a continental breakfast in the motel lobby, but only enough room for 6-8 people at a time.....

Before we depart, Tom and Becky Barker drive to our hotel to meet and spend breakfast with us

    Leaving Kingman, eastbound

We encountered an accident and stopped to render assistance. Our cell phones were all out of range, so we couldn't call anyone. The girl involved looked ok and was being helped by friends. We proceeded up the road to report the incident where possible.

After a couple hours, we find a neat town/place called Hacksberry. A priste ne 58 Corvette at the doorway and a trip into the past inside
More stuff to buy and stow in the car
    Back on the road again...

Found a good looking 63 Hawk on the front line of a car lot in Truxton or $3100.00

    Moving toward Williams, AZ

Lunch in Williams on Route 66. When we passed through Williams westbound, we were a day early for their Route 66 celebration. Now that we're coming through again, we're a day late.

    Fourteen for lunch

Once out of the mountains, the wind across the road picked up by a sizeable factor. Off in the distance, you could see the dust being whipped up to a low tan cloud.
A few dust devils appeared to remind us of the recent weather catastophes

More wide open spaces, what else...

We took a side trip to Meteor Crater, about 6-9 miles through bland terrian. The road was pretty nice, but the winds were really blowing up the dust

We were not permitted to go out to the observation deck because the wind across the rim was clocked at 97 mph that morning

We arrived in Winslow, Az to spend the night at the La Posada Hotel, a renovated old Santa Fe Railway Station Hotel

And as luck would have it, another tour coincided wth ours, meeting at the hotel. This was the California Route 66 Association, with Jim Conkle and his filming crew, bestowing awards on the best hotels and attractions on Route 66.
Having our cars available for the shoot was just the right amount of notariety for all of us. We'll be on national TV in a few w eeks.
The URL for their website is: California Route 66 Organization

The La Posada Page is HERE

Here are a few pics from our side during the filming

After checking in, Karen and Donna decided to walk to the Old Trails Museum in the heart of Winslow (about three blocks from the hotel). Paul (Johnson), Gale, Nadine and Dorothy tagged along and saw some very interesting Winslow and ancient native American artifacts. Karen bought "Standing On The Corner" t-shirts at a nice gift shop across eastbound old 66 from the "Standing On The Corner" Park.

Prior to dinner in the La Posada restaurant

Nadine in the swing of things

    Festivities before dinner.

Signature Soup, the chef's specialty / half corn and half black bean with his initials

    The table is set!
Tomorrow, on to Gallup, NM. We lose an hour changing time zones

Paul & Karen hosted a hospitality room for us that evening before dinner, relating a few stories about their travels through here before and a few interesting facts about the hotel
The bolt holding the passenger side seatback in Larry's car snapped. Frank Fuller and Norris helped create a fix to keep things semi-normal, until a new part could be installed
