Williams to the Grand Canyon National Park
This AM, we take the train to the Grand Canyon State Park. We had to check out of the room at the Fray-Marcos and left most of our luggage at the hotel. The overnight at Grand Canyon only required a small bag. Before the train departed, there was some western entertainment. The actors were great, funny to the bone, etc. One picked up a piece of dried manure and offered it to the crowd, as some of their "horse cakes". In the same breath, he changed the subject, allowing the "cake" to drop out of his hand and walked over to an unsuspecting soul, asked where he was from and shook his hand.... They noted the Studebakers parked in the background and promised not to shoot any holes in them. "If we aim at them, we'll miss, so don't worry". |

Finally on the train, which turned out to be the stylish 1950's stainless steel type that you used to see in the National Geographic magazines. Our car had the domed observation deck and our group was in the forward half of the lower part of the car. There was free food and entertainment for the 2 hour trip. Over the course of the 60 miles to the resort, the scenery was beautiful. |

The train pulled into the Grand Canyon resort just before noon and offloaded everyone to a waiting bus for a ride the the Maswick Lodge, where we had lunch. Finishing lunch, we reboarded the bus for a one hour tour of the South Rim. Upon our return, Dave finalized the arrangements for our rooms, which were in smaller buildings outside the lodge. We set out to find them and set up for the evening. |

After settling in at the room, we decided to return to the rim for some sunset pics. There's a special Sunset Tour bus that only goes to 2 overlooks for this event. These were taken from Hopi Point.

Following sundown, a snack in the resort cafeteria and back to the room for a rest. Tomorrow, a free day to do as we like. Many other parts of the area to visit and the bus rides are all free |
