Day 18 - 8 May 2003

Barstow, CA to Kingman, AZ - 194 miles

Nebo - Dagett - Newberry Springs - Amboy - Essex - Needles - Topack - Kingman

Well, we were relieved that nothing happened to the cars last night :-) . We all arose at dawn, for refuel and breakfast. Norris had a low tire, but was quickly taken care of. Another cool morning, but we're still in the high desert, so it will moderate shortly.
Breakfast at the IHOP is a short walk up the hill from the Motel. Everyone slowly appears for the next days trek
Woke to a breezy day in Barstow

    Cowboy truck

That last pic must have startled Dave's car because when we started to move out, his horn started sounding continuously and he had to pull over right away to disconnect it....

    Scenery Pics up Route 66 / I-40

    Stopped for some roadside pics

More of 'on the road' and a pit stop

We passed the famous Bagdad Cafe in Newberry Springs.
    Hear da' music!

    Back to sanity....

We traveled Old Route 66 for a good while. On approaching the point where we previously met Studebob on the westbound trip, we took a turn off the "National Trails" pavement, onto what was a terribly maintained section of road. It pounded the cars so much that we wouldn't drive over 10-15 mph. Finally after a few miles, we got back on the Interstate.

Dave wanted us to see a stop on a very old alignment of Route 66, so we, left the interstate and drove about 40 miles, down into a valley. The altitude went from 4000 feet to about 450...

    .

Here we found Roys Cafe, Route 66, Amboy, CA. This is an old Route 66 stop in the middle of nowhere.

    Not much traffic

    Some of us browse

    His back yard!

The post office across the street

Along the road near Hacksberry, the berm would be decorated for miles with the names of visitors, formed in small stones

    Back on the road

    Entering Arizona

    The geology is really impressive

    And we're in Kingman ...

We were met at the Powerhouse Museum, in Kingman, by the Chief of Police, Larry Butler, who i s a Studebaker afficianado in his own right. Later, a city councilman, Mr. Fra nk McVey, who owns a pristene 1951 Pickup with a 232 V8, visited and spoke with us

    .....at the Powerhouse Museum

    The landscaping at our hotel
Out here, grass is an option!
