Day 6 - 26 April 2003

Elk City, OK to Tucumcari, NM - 246 miles

Breakfast at Denny's or MacDonalds, gassed up and left Elk City for Tucumcari, NM....
Entered Texas on I-40 at 9:45
    Gas stop at Shamrock.

Stopped at the Devils Rope Museum (Barbed Wire) on Route 66, McLean, TX,
Those large balls on the pedestals are "barbed wahr".

McLean also has a lot of murals painted on buildings pertaining to the old era.

We also stopped at the Phillips 66 Service Station, which is a preserved 1930's model, in a surburban section of McLean.
Lunch at the Red River Steakhouse, where your dinner napkins were bandanas (used?).... real cowboys with spurs and brown stuff on their boots...

On to Amarillo, Tx, where we stopped to take a picture of Fay and Frank with the their Lark. The car was originally purchased in Amarillo.
Dave selected a famous steakhouse for the photo, where they offer you a free 72 ounce steak, as long as you can eat it in one hour. If not, then you pay dearly

    On to Tucumcari

    Gassing up in Elk City

    Onto old Route 66....
    Through the old towns

    This is the "Range"...
Like in " Home, Home on the.."

And these are the "Amber waves of grain..."

    Thought we'd never get here

    McLean, Texas....Old stuff here..

An Old Route 66 Service Station restored

    Another one up the road

Take a look at this next sequence. We were on the old National Trails mapping, when the road turned from pavement to dirt. Being the adventurous types, we all merrily kept driving down the lane. The road got worse and I started laying back a bit. After a few miles, I still had the lead car in sight when he radioed back that "We've come to a cattle fence". We all turned around and went back to pick up the Interstate. Apparently, this area of road isn't maintained and the state sold the property rights to a rancher, who closed it in...!!.

We' re not kidding about old roads....
<----- You can see them up ahead, turning around at the cattle fence.

Now we're back on track again...
    z

Faye and Frank take a pic with their car, which came from Amarillo
This is Amarillo...You can get a free 72 ounce steak free, if you can eat it all

Cadillac Ranch...Where 10 Cadillacs are planted in the Texas soil

    These are stockyards....(Close the windows!)

    More.... w i d e, o p e n..... spaces...
    Ditto

Finally, Tucumcari, NM and the Blue Swallow Motel

    The car gets a drink

Arriving in late afternooon, at the Blue Swallow Inn. Small, clean, air conditioned rooms and a private garage for your car
Pulled a little maintenance on the car and note one last picture of a can of Engine Kool. They sell a lot of it down here.....keeps the radiator coolant about 20 degrees less than the regular mix does

A fellow stopped by whose Dad used to own a Studebaker Dealership a few blocks away. Enjoyed the cars and a chat

Dinner at a local restaurant and some well earned sleep
