Avanti II RQA models
Version C

A partial registry of owners of the Avanti Automobile. Registrants included are members of the Avanti Chat group and other interested parties. No addresses or phone numbers will be included to protect privacy.

4647 Avantis were built by the Studebaker Corporation from June 1962 - December 1963. 1389 models were manufactured in 1962. 3258 units were manufactured in 1963. Of these, 2418 were 1963 models, 30 were transitional, 54 were 1964 models with round headlights and 764 were 1964 models throughout....

45 cars in 1965, 59 cars in 1966, 66 cars in 1967, and 100 cars in 1968.

Newman - Altman spent 1965 re-engineering the car for the GM engine, upgraded upholstery and other amenities. There were no official 1965 models. Any cars produced in 1965 are regarded as '66' models. The R-series engine options under Studebaker also disappeared and the vehicle numbering system went from "R-xxxx' to 'RQA-xxxx'. They adapted the GM 327 Cubic inch/300 HP through a custom bellhousing and coupled it to the existing Powershift (FMX type) transmission. The remainder of the car stayed, as Studebaker had produced it, with the exception of the emblems.

The installation of the new engine required the body to be pivoted upward in front, in order to accomodate its dimensions. This was accomplished by using varying thicknesses of steel shims along the frame mounting points. The resulting, additional, three inch gap between the fender and top of the wheel was remedied by installing filler pieces at the top of the wheel opening.
The 327 engine remained until 1969, when the 350/300 was installed, again coupled with the original Powershift (FMX) transmission.

For those that need a trivia point, the "II" in the Avanti II emblem was made from the Lark's V-8 emblem, by cutting off the first 2 characters of the "VIII"

Mar 2007
I received a phone call today from a collector in San Diego that says he has the only 1967 Avanti with a factory installed supercharger and corvette engine. It was nicknamed the "White Whale" and originally built for the president of the company that built the Avanti body. He states it has 38,000 original miles and he wants to sell it. He feels the market should bring $30K (I did not want to get involved with estimating it's worth, I just told him I would pass the information onto this group). The car was repainted red by Nate Altman and sold to a gentleman in South Bend. The collector in San Diego is the second owner. If you want his contact information, send me an e-mail and I will forward his contact info to you. He states he has all of the documentation for the car.
