A partial registry of owners of the Avanti Automobile. Registrants included are members of the Avanti Chat group and other interested parties. No addresses or phone numbers will be included to protect privacy.

In early 1970, due to upgrades, the car designation went from RQA-xxxx to RQB-xxxx and the most prominent improvement were the high back seats. In 1970, there were only 5 cars designated as "RQA" models. Other changes were in the interior appointments, the rear brakes went to the GM self adjusting, self energizing type, with Chrysler drums. The factory never opted to install a proportioning valve with the new rear brakes and the left rear will occasionally lockup under a hard stop. The transmission, initially, went from the FMX type to a Turbo350.

As the Avanti II went through the mechanical and interior appointment changes, the original body lines never varied and were merely embellished with cosmetic differences. The mechanical changes, were never recorded by the factory, but included a change to the turbo 350 transmission, then to the Turbo 400 and on to the T200-R4 & T700-R4.
Sunroofs were introduced. These were originally of German manufacture and can still be repaired by specific shops. In addition to the Recaro seats and rich leather upholstery, the cars were made to adhere to the emissions standards. The resulting power in the early 70's was reduced to a mere whimper of the original.
Bumpers remained steel, but for a short period, additional protection systems were added to comply with crash-worthiness requirements. The bodies were subtly refined and improved by the Avanti craftsmen.
With the depletion of existing stocks of frames, late in 1982, it was reported that 6 cylinder Lark frames were being used in the current manufacture. These were lighter duty frames, but were modified and strenthened to required specifications
Closing in on 1983, it was evident that a chassis renovation was required to continue producton. The choice of the renaissance, was the GM Monte Carlo/El Camino chassis.

( In the mid 70's, Nate Altman "stretched" a single Avanti coupe. It is 3-4" LONGER, but it's still on a StudebakerLark/Avanti frame. The "stretch" is in the rear roof panel between the rear of the rear side vent window and the front edge of the rear window. No special designation, and former Avanti Tom Taberski remembers it leaving the factory and working on it afterwards, but has NO IDEA whatever became of it. It has NO SPECIAL DESIGNATION -- so you 1974-77 Avanti II owners, grab your tape measures! Mike Shutko, Nov 2003 ( Mike passed in April 2007)

daily driver for last 3 years, this car is comfortable & dependable. Cold A/C(R134), dark tinted windows, alarm with keyless entry, adjustable rear air shocks. GM 305 V8 with 4-speed automatic trans makes it quick, yet easy on fuel, & serviceable by anyone. Originally gray, it has an excellent respray in bright red by a prior owner. The original shag carpeting has been replaced through-out with quality cut pile, & the leather is in good condition. The car is offered with 4 real wire wheels mounted with blackwalls, but has Lincoln alloys with white walls on it right now. While not perfect, this car is a headturner.

1982 Avanti II - 300 Hp SBC, Tremec T56 six speed manual

The air conditioning is finally rebuilt with excellent results.
While at the shop a 2-1/4" full dual exhaust system with Magnaflows
and new SS tips was installed. The oil filter was relocated behind a
shroud in the back end of the drivers side wheel well as the drivers
side exhuast routing blocks the SBC filter location. BTW the drivers
side exhaust was wrapped with header insulation - this made a
tremendous improvement in cutting down heat in the driver's footwell.

The exhaust note is now quite low and pulsing. It is a pleasure to
have some audible feedback while running through the gears. Keeping
things from getting too loud is not impossible with six gears to
choose from. However, even at idle the car now draws attention
      audibly as well as visibly.

We were hoping for better gas mileage with the manual transmission.
No measured figures are available yet (the speedo/odometer had a
habit of pulling loose from the tranny under hard accelleration - now
fixed) but I'm guessing less than 18 mpg. The float setting (Holley
      650) will be checked on Wednesday.

The engine is turning 1200 rpm at 85 mph in sixth gear and about 1100
rpm at 60 mph in fifth.

Once the motor is tuned and a few rattles related to the tranny are
worked out we are going to attend to the interior.

We will try to take some pics of the exhaust next time the car is up
      on a lift.

RQB377I, has a second "gunsight" hump added on the passenger side. It doesn't improve the looks of the car, but doesn't look bad either. Also, had a Paxton blower installed then (Holley carb in an aluminum airbox). The blower has had a recent rebuild
The airbox is high enough to imprint the image of its top in the hood insulation pad but the hood will (if just barely) close properly.
RQB-377I is white/white, with red pinstriping, red dash and carpets and red piping on the seats.
