1971 Avanti II
A fully-restored example of a landmark design
After Studebaker ceased U.S. production in December, 1963, the rights to continue building the Raymond Leowy-designed Avanti were purchased by Avanti Motor Corporation. They continued to build this classic fiberglass GT coupe in South Bend between 1965 and 1982, with the only significant changes being the replacement of the Studebaker power train with a Corvette 350 short-block engine and turbo 350 transmission. Former Studebaker craftsmen hand-built 107 of these 1971 models. This one sold new for $9,640 including the following options: power steering, electric windows, tinted windshield, AM/FM radio with tape player and rear seat speakers, electric antenna, magnum "500" wheels, boat hitch (never used), premium white sidewall tires, decorator fabric interior, and luxury carpet.
The current owners purchased the car in 2001 following its complete ground-up restoration. The owners have detailed photos of the restoration process. This restoration process included: Engine: complete rebuild including the addition of a high performance oil pump. Transmission: complete rebuild. Electrical: repaired as necessary, replaced charge system w/single wire Delco, rebuilt starting system and distributor. Cooling System: installed new high flow radiator, new hoses, new water pump, 6-blade high pitch fan, and viscous clutch. Fuel System: rebuilt Edelbrock Quadrajet carburetor, new electric fuel pump and fuel lines, and repaired/cleaned/resealed fuel tank. Brakes: rebuilt calipers and rear wheel cylinders; replaced front rotors and brake pads, brake shoes, all brake lines, and converted entire system to DOT 5 silicone fluid. Suspension: rebuilt entire system and installed new rear springs. Body: following bead-blasting, all stress cracks were repaired/reinforced. Numerous applications of gelcoat, epoxy primer and paint were applied with block sanding and 30-day drying cycles between each application. New undercoast then added. Frame: after bead blasting rear half of frame was replaced. Front assembly was repaired and epoxy primer and paint were applied to entire frame. Torque boxes were cleaned and treated with rust preventative. Exhaust System: replaced complete system and installed evaporative canister. Interior: installed new windshield and custom interior (including trunk) rebuilt Recaro seats and power window motors and mechanisms. Added seat belts.
The sellers have owned this beautiful personal luxury car for almost five years and it now has about 5,000 miles on the complete restoration. They have driven this car throughout the eastern Colorado region with no problems whatsoever. The car has always been garaged out of inclement weather. It never fails to attract lots of attention at car shows and cruises due to its classic design, gorgeous raspberry-colored paint (Iris), and immaculate condition inside and out. The current owners recently purchased a 2002 Avanti and must make room for it in their garage. Otherwise, they would never part with this super nice 1971! The new owner will also receive several Avanti shop manuals, many miscellaneous spare parts, a hood bra, touch up paint, etc.
