Wheel bearing maintenance: (While you're doing your 3000 mile lubrication, make sure you grease your kingpins adequately before this:) Front: A check of the bearings once in a while, may reveal some looseness caused by wear that can affect steering and stability. )Jack up one wheel and place a support under the outer part of the A-frame. The wheel should be allowed to spin. )Grab the wheel at the 6 and 12 o clock position and rock the wheel in and out, at the top and bottom. )A small amount (1/16") of play should be noticible, any more can be caused by loose wheel bearings or worn kingpins. If you look behind the wheel while rocking it, you can check movement in the kingpins. If they're freshly greased, it can offset their movement and isolate wheel bearing problems. Front: Remove wheel from rotor or drum. Disk brake: A) remove caliper from spindle, taking care to note shim pack placement B) remove dust cap, cotter pin, spindle nut. C) move the top of the rotor inward with the heel of your hand D) The weight of the drum will move the washer and bearing outward on the spindle E) catch the keyed washer and outer wheel bearing in a clean rag. F) Remove the rotor G) Remove the Drum Drum brake: Use "B", "D", "E" and "G" above )Prepare a pan, large enough to hold the rotor, containing 2-3 quarts of kerosene. Don't use gasoline, since it will dry out the bearing and may cause minor scratches. )Use a plastic bristle brush, small enough to move thru the bearing cavity to clean the old grease from the rotor. Don't use any metal tools at all in here. )Be careful not to damage the inner seal, unless you plan on changing it. )You can eventually clean out all the old grease from the inner bearing and seal area. )Wash the outer bearing in a similar manner. )DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR TO DRY THE BEARINGS. Use a good grade of Disk brake wheel bearing grease. Paraffin based greases are superior. Caution on Front wheel drive grease, some use lead. Either use a bearing grease tool or mount the outer bearing on your index finger and use the other to wipe dabs of grease around the perimeter of the bearing. Roll it between your fingers to get the grease into the inner race. Make sure you get some into the inner race area... Recoat the inner bearing from the rear of the rotor or drum. The hub is wider in the center to allow hot grease to pool, so don't be too sparing. ))Mount the drum or rotor back on the spindle ))wipe some grease onto the outer race ))Insert the outer bearing and washer ))Clean off the end of the spindle and use a marker pen to indicate where the cotter pin hole is. ))Snug up the nut, but do not tighten ))Mount the caliper with the shims placed properly ( as they were originally) or re-align the calipers. Can't overstress to keep this part straight ))Install the wheel and bolt snugly ADJUSTING WHEEL FRONT BEARINGS ))) Use a good torque wrench with socket on the spindle nut. ))) While rotating the wheel, slowly torque the nut to 15 foot pounds, not more ))) Back off the spindle nut one land, plus enough to insert the NEW cotter pin ))) Bend the cotter and reinstall the dustcap ))) Drop the car down and tighten the lugs on the wheel REAR: ) jack the rear of the car up and place jackstands under the axle inside the springs. )Release the E-brake )Remove the wheels )Remove the brake drums ))Studebaker non-flanged axles require a special puller to remove the drums. )) Studebaker and later, flanged axle drums come right off On Studebaker tapered axle: Drivers side: )remove the brake line to the brake cylinder (option1) )remove the backing plate(PS) (and bend away from axle, option 2) )Slide the bearing and axle out for maintenance Pass side: same as above On Studebaker and later flanged axle Drivers side )Remove the Bearing retainer cap with the felt seal )Slide the bearing and axle out for maintenance Passenger side )use a screwdriver to bend the locktab on the adjusting collar )Remove the bearing retainer cap withthe felt seal )Slide the axle out for maintenance Clean and pack bearings New grease seals are CR13165 Insert seal, insert axle carefully Insert Drivers side axle first, bolt retainer If required, a new felt seal can be installed by drilling out the old inner retainer spot weld, removing and replacing the felt. Use short, 10 X 32 screws, washers and lock washers to refit the inner retainer , installing the screws through the drilled hole with the head on the inside. Tighten the nut over the lock washer and punch the threads to prevent loosening. Insert passenger side On Studebaker tapered axles, shims are used to adjust end play. Replace shims and bolt retainer On Flanged axles, screw in the collar to get your adjustment and bend the tab into a detent Endplay should be .006 - .010 Re-install brake lines where applicable, bleed brakes if necessary Reinstall drums Studebaker Tapered Axles - THE AXLE AND DRUM HUB MUST BE COMPLETELY DRY and FREE OF ANY LUBRICATION TO AVOID SPLITTING THE HUB WHEN TIGHTENED. Reinstall wheels
