Sep 2005 (waterpumps General) ----------------------------------------- There are 3 different pumps on Studebakers, V8 standard, Heavy duty, and Avanti. The difference is on a standard pump you can see about 1/2" of shaft between the pump housing and flange. On a heavy duty pump there is almost no shaft showing and the boss for the bearing on the water pump is larger and comes out to meet the flange. This pump is used on the air conditioned models, now the Avanti pump is the same as the heavy duty, but it has 3 gussets that come down from the main body of the pump to boss on bearing housing and you should try to use nothing else on an Avanti but an Avanti pump because of the weight of the water pump pully. Casting number on the Avanti pump is 1560400. Casting number on the heavy duty type with the long bearing boss is 527070. Casting number on the standard pump is 1554634. --------------------------------------- Water Pump Part numbers: Standard V8: - 527070 - 531169 - 1558224 - All fit V8 - (many new standard V8 pumps will not have a casting number because they are NEW manufacture) HD wp part# - Casting number - 527070 Avanti wp part# - #1560395 - Casting number 1560400 V8 Fan cluth #1560257 Six #192258 for 5A,-12A, J5, K5, L5, 1937-1942 Commander, Dictator, CE Casting number 189315 #663286 OR #115A for 1941-1948 M16-M17 truck - Casting number 662645 #682630 - #515196 Cars 1942-53 - All Champ and Champ 6 cyl trucks 1946-'58 #1563639 Champion engines 1954-1964 Straight 8: #199684 -1941-1942 PRESIDENT 8 - Casting number 190799 --------------------------------------- Sep 2005 Read service letter S-1048 dated July 10 , 1962. If you do not have a copy of that, please email me. Also, there are a number of reproduction V8 waterpumps around that are not correct. The impeller is to far away from the housing and the pumps do not pump enough water around the block and radiator and the cars overheat. The critical dimension to check is the tip of the impeller to the mounting flange ,934-.938 ". The drawing also shows the way the pulley hub should go on and how far the front of the hub to the mounting flange is. (2 33/64 ".) The original Stude gaskets were thin. The gaskets supplied with the repro pumps are much thicker and move the pump out to much and that increases the impeller to housing clearence and reduces the pump capacity or volume. May 2002 Graphite face Seal: '52-'64 V-8 and '54-'64 six cyl. Use John Crane CF-SP-21647 These are readily available from industrial pump supply houses. Look in the local Yellow Pages for dewatering pumps, sump pumps, etc. Show them the part. There were various suppliers other than Crane as well. (Lots of car makers in the '50s used these seals. Ford, Mopar, most independants, etc.) Slinger: Brass M.S.7000 AB6-ZZ for 5/8" shaft dia. Also ask at the pump supply house. Bearing and shaft assembly: Ask to see the catalog at an industrial bearing supply house. Shaft dia. is: 0.6262-.6267". The shaft length varies per Studebaker application, but can be cut to length with a lathe or carbide saw. The dimension of the bearing is: 1.1806-1.1811" dia. Bearing length 1.525-1.535". Bevel the shaft ends on a bench grinder after cutting to length. (No, you cannot press the shaft deeper into the bearing, because the shaft is the inner race.) Standard pump shafts typically used ball bearings on each end. Heavy duty pumps mostly used roller bearings on the fan end. All types are cataloged, but usually is a 'special order'. To resurface the pump housing, a 1.5" dia. grinding stone with a removable pilot can be used. Apply small washers under the head of the pilot shaft screw to keep the stone from walking, during the resurfacing procedure. Use 320 grit sand paper to polish after grinding. Grinding stone is available from most hardware stores. Use heavy Loctite when assembling, to secure fan hubs, etc. --------------- Rebuilders Last 18 Feb 2004 ------------------------- Only water pump rebuilders I can find Rayloc Hancock, MD 301-678-5555 Cardone Industries Philadelphia, PA 215-912-3469 --------------------------- Aug 2005 ---------------------------- Aftermarket Water pump Study -------------- There is an interesting article in the September issue of Turning Wheels in the Co-Operator section, page 26, about a study that has been done with respect to some of the reproduction V-8 water pumps which have been found to not have the close tolerances and smaller impellers versus than the original pumps and this may be contributing to overheating conditions particularly at idle. This may explain the recent rash of complaint folks have been making with respect to V-8's overheating. Apparently you can identify the suspect repro pumps by the size of the pump number (527070) cast on the housing. If the numbers are 5/16" high, versus 1/4" in the original pumps, you may have one of the out of spec pumps. Scott Stastney of Deluxe Autowerks did the study and Bob Kapteyn provided it to Turning Wheels.
