I need a little help. Can I place a 15 inch 60 or 65 series low profile tire on my 73 Avanti without any modifications? I need a V or Z rated tire for my car as it has been altered mechanically and I need traction and reliability at the speeds this car likes to travel at. Thanks for your help. --------------------------------------------- Tao: My "88 has the original tires on it and they are TA's, 215x65x15. This is also the size noted in the owners manual. Can't help on the spoiler. RM -------------------------------------------- im asked about using radials on stock Avanti rims: "I am putting radial tires on the original Avanti rims and would like to know what is the largest I can put on the in rims. I have been told that 195 series is recommended, but I can remember from many years ago that you could go one size larger, 205 without any problems. Does anyone know the tire dia. of the original set-up so I can try to match with the new tires and the speedometer will not be too far out.." I found out the hard way that there are two different series of radials. A metric 195x15 from the late 60's/early 70's is comparable in height (diameter) to the original 6:70x15. A P-metric P195/75R15 is smaller, more comparable to the original 6:00x15 found on 6-cylinder Larks. A P205/75R15 will work on Avanti rims (though a 6-inch Chrysler rim is much better). However, I have found that even a P205/75R15 is smaller in diameter and lower in height that a 6:70x15. To get the closest height/diameter match (in other words, keep your speedometer close) you need a P215/75R15 which may push it for Avanti rims. However, I have known people to run 215s on stock Hawk rims which are 1/2" narrower than Avanti and back before I ever heard of the rims being too narrow (1969) I ran a set of FR70x15 tires on stock Avanti rims with no problems (other than hydroplaning). I believe the FR70 was wider than a P205/75 or P215/75 (keep in mind that a 70 width as in P205/70R15 is wider but smaller in diameter than a P205/75R15). My height statements from above are based on eyeball assessment- I stood an old-stock 6:70x15 beside a P205/75R15 and found that the height of the old tire was over an inch greater than the radial which should be enough to throw off the speedometer. Paul Johnson --------------------- BIG RIMS I did quite a bit of research and mock up before I installed the 17" tires and wheels. The goal was to give the car a more aggressive stance and to return some of the rake seen on the originals. I determined that using two different tire sizes would be the answer. I use a 17' X 8" front wheel with 4.50" back spacing and a 17" X 9.5" rear with 6" backspacing. A 235/45/17" front tire is used with 1.5 front coils removed from the spring and a 255/45/17" rear on stock height leafs. I massaged the rear fender lips back to 3/16" with a sanding block. The front fenders had the common problem of cracking at the center of the arch which I repaired by bonding in a piece of thin wall aluminum tubing. I first carefully bent the tubing in the exact contour of the arch and then bonded it above the original lip with chopped glass and resin. I block sanded the lip back to the new filled section at he center and no interference occurs. The inner rim will touch the upper kingpin grease fitting at hard full lock but the inner tire hits the swaybar simultaneously acting as a stop. Stick on weights are a must for balancing. October 2003 Any Jones ========================================= June 2004 ///////////Will G70-15 tires mounted on mags with what I believe is 3" //backspacing fit on the rear of my 55 coupe?/ Will F70-15 tires mounted on mags with 3" backspacing fit on the front and not cause turning issues? /////////////// That said, C/Ks are much more forgiving than Lark bodies in terms of big ol' tires. JP had a project '53 (or was it '54?) in his driveway for a while with reversed rims, G78s, and *LOWERING BLOCKS* and they didn't rub, at least in the back. Couldn't tell ya about the front as the car had no engine. Whatever you fit you will probably get some rubbing at full lock as 205/75s rub on my 56J with new springs and stock 5" wide wheels. If they clear the fender lips, setting the wheels out a little might actually *help* as they're hitting on the inner fenders. Now on my Lark, that's a different story. I'm going to 14" wheels to allow for fatter tires. What car is this that you're asking about? -------------------------- 6 inch rims. Looking at a conversion chart it appears that the F70 bias is equivalent to a 215/70 and the G70 is close to a 225/70. Car is in the body shop until tomorrow and the show is Friday. If what I have wont fit I need to start searching for something else. ------------------- don't see why that won't work. JP had 205s or 215s on similar size Torq-Thrusts on Bermuda and they were OK. ----------- Bob I have 205/75s on 6 in.Cragar S/S mags on my 59 Hawk and no problem. Ron -------------- June 2004 63 Sedan American Racing Torq-Thrust II polished wheels. The dimensions are 15 X 6 with 5 on 4.5" bolt circle and 3-3/8" backspacing. I believe they retail about $180 each . -------------------- I have 215/75/15's on 6" rims with 3" backspacing on my '54. They just barely fit (it is probably a hair lower than stock in the back). 225/70's MAY fit since they aren't as tall as 215/70's (157.5 cm vs 161.25 cm sidewall height). IMHO, they won't fill the wheel well as nicely as the 215/75's, but that's personal preference. I have 205/70/15's in front with the same rims. No rubbing problems lock to lock. 215's MAY work, but no guarantee.
