To change the fluid, run the engine at least 4 minutes or until the engine and Trans. have reached operating Temp. then raise the car, and rotate the engine until one of the torque converter drain plugs is in line with the hole in the housing and remove the brass plug with a 3/8" (it could be a 7/16") X 1/4" drive socket which should be small enough to fit through the hole. Though I have done it with one plug removed, the Manual says to then quickly rotate the engine again 180 degrees and remove the OTHER plug to allow air to enter, then you will be able to completely drain the converter, a feat not possible on most newer Trans. Then remove the drain plug in the Trans. oil pan and drain the main case completely and replace the three drain plugs, replacing the gasket on the pan drain plug. To refill, just roll back the right side carpet to expose the cover on the center tunnel of the floor and remove it, remove the filler cap/dipstick and install the first three Quarts of Type F, (second choice FA) or if not available, the Dextron II(*) or whatever the latest replacement is, do NOT use any of today's Type "A" which WAS the preferred fluid IN THE DAY. Apply the Parking Brake AND foot Brake and start the engine and place in neutral, and be sure to set the idle as low as possible as it will splash around and even out with too much RPM while the cap/dipstick is off! While idling the engine, pour 4 more quarts into the Trans. and run the gear selector through all of the positions slowly, check the oil level by installing the cap and turning it to the stop, and removing it to read the level, add enough fluid to reach the full mark. I would have about 10 Qts. on hand, as it does not say how many are needed. ...Whew! Next time, BUY THE MANUAL! It's due again in 15,000 miles!
