Feb 2008 The bezels can be removed without distortion with a little patience. Select a rigid piece of plywood, 1/2 or 3/4 inch thick and cut a uniform hole to provide a snug fit on the bezel protrusion. While holding the instrument down inverted in the hole, carefully start to pry up the rim a little at a time with a small screw driver. It will take at least 6 passes around the instument to bring up the rim sufficiently to free the case from the bezel. Flame red or glow orange hobby enamel is a good match for the needles. Reassemble the instrument in the reverse procedure using the plywood hole to stabilize the bezel while you carefully tap or bend in the rim of the bezel. Once it is almost flattened, you can then go around the rim tapping it down with a pin punch. There should be no distortion of the front side of the bezel. I have restored many Avanti instruments this way. You can always try out the procedure on a junk Hawk GT instrument before tackling the Avanti units.
