March 2004 10" rear brake drums - ALL Studebaker cars (Using a ) 10 inch drum for 1984-85 Jeep Cherokee with the 2.8 L V6 - 2 wheel drive. Best to search on-line for best price. Advance Auto Parts has Raybestos drums at a very good price ($40), best I could find and they had in stock at local store. You could by two for the price of the same at NAPA. Autozone store was just a pain in the butt trying to get the least expensive drum. The drum will overhang the baking plate but will not hit it. This drum is finned. Use 1/8" steel spacer from (part Number WSS5) www.stockcarproducts.com/wheels2.htm , they were $7 each. This outfit is in Virginia. Telephone number is 1-800-262-8099. They have other steel spacers available too. I am waiting for them to arrive to see if the OD will need to be filed down any to fit inside drum properly. Holes may have to be enlarged a bit to fit on the shoulder of the stud. Use the following studs. Balkamp 641-1171 or Dorman 610-132. Same exact stud. Same as Avanti disc brake stud. Sequence is this. After removing hub from Stude drum and then removing the studs, place spacer on front of hub and then the drum. Insert the studs one at a time in the same sequence as if you were tightening the wheel nuts. Don't press them completely tight until all are in. When completed, approximately 3/32 inch of the non-threaded portion of the stud will stick out of the drum surface. This amount should not interfere with tightening the wheel nuts. If you are using the heavier Ford type wheels as came on the Ford Ranger, the 3/4 inch Studebaker wheel nuts are more than sufficient. The newer Ranger wheels are thicker and the hole is actually designed for a 3/4 inch nut not the larger 13/16 inch nut. I have tried both and the 3/4 inch gives the best fit. Anyone that thinks the 3/4 inch nut will pull through the hole in the wheel is not thinking clearly. (addendum) An update on the steel spacers. The OD is larger than necessary by 9/16" all the way around, but I am going to turn it down using one of the rear hubs and a BIG coarse file. Hub mounted to the axle and plate bolted to the hub - a crude lathe. But it will work. Holes in the plate do not have to be enlarged and it will be sandwiched between the drum and the hub. Various part numbers for the drum are as follows: Aimco 8838 Raybestos 2513 (also 102513 from Advance Auto Parts) Bendix 140303 NAPA 640-1105 Wearever YH140303 All of them seem to be made in China. The Wearever brand that I got could be turned down on the inside edge as there is alot of meat there. So if one didn't want to fool around with spacers then they could go that route. Without the spacer, the stud may stick out too far and interfere with the wheel so put a washer between the head of the stud and the hub when the stud is pressed into the hub. The reason for the spacer or removing an 1/8 inch from the inner edge of the drum is that the edge of the shoe contacts the inside edge of the drum. Some drums may not require the removal depending upon the machining done on it during production. The drum fits snug on the shoulder of the stud and could be pressed into place with the wheel nuts and some washers. If it weren't for these two fine gentlemen, I would not have any info to send to you. Make sure they get credit for this too. There are very few wheels whose center hole fits over the machined "rise" in a Studebaker truck drum.. GM Van wheels 15x7 JJ will fit! ======================================= Drum Brakes - tightness fitting new shoes- You might also have to work on the emergency brake. Some manufacturers are making shoe linings a little thicker and if your drums have not been turned, they are a real tight fit. You may need to elongate the slot in the emergency brake to allow the rear shoe to move in a little more.
