Guys, I'd like to add a booster to my brakes on my 63 sedan, when I put it all back together. Has anyone found an off the shelf unit from a local parts store to work? If so, I'd sure appreciate a part number. Thanks!

Midland Co. has a very nice remote mount booster that a lot of street rodders use. Easy to mount, easy to plumb. You might find them on line, or an ad in one of the many street rod mags. Hope this helps.

FWIW,

I had already put a '63 lark dual master on the firewall of my '53 and then wanted to add a booster when I ran into less than solid braking due to some firewall flex. I acquired a booster and mounting parts from a '62 cruiser. To make the master work with the booster (that originally had the '62's single master on it) the only change was to make a new adjustment screw for the pushrod (shorter). I later read someplace that the '62 booster is the "same" as a '62 chevy full size....

Here is a picture of the '62 cruiser booster with a '63 master attached to it in my car:

I stole these pictures from the Napa website showing the #NBB5473537
booster for a '62 chevy:

https://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=NBB&PartNumber=5473537&Description=Power+Brake+Booster+w%2fo+Master+Cylinder

Here is a closeup of said pushrod screw:

On that '62 cruiser booster I cut the head off a 1/4-20 bolt and ground it down to a ball shaped end. The original screw could not adjust short enough to let the master return to non-braking.

All this said, this is/was a $$ proposition. I ended up having the used booster rebuilt for >$100 plus what I paid for it in the first place. If I had to do it over again, I would find some other option since my car is not stock under the hood anyway. Looks like the Chevy booster from Napa is not cheap either $134 + core charge.

The rebuild kits for the stock '63 masters are sort of spendy too. I think there are other options out there involving a different master and everything.

I'm working on a Hydraulic booster for my Champ truck. This should resolve all interference problems under the hood. A GM unit rotated 180 degrees to get the accumulator away from the valve cover seems like it will work. The Champ has been fitted with a 79 Chevy Nova front frame clip, thus IFS, disks and PS. I'm retaining the Stude V8, 294 CID engine and fitting a TH700R4 behind it. Will advise progress.
I captured the PS pump, hydro booster, master cylinder and porportioning valve from a GMC pickup in a wrecking yard for $100. Thus all the components for the brakes and steering should be compatible per GM design.

Can anyone confirm that the '62 Chevy unit will work in a Stude? Will it mount to the Stude firewall bracketry?

According to the post above, it's the one for a full-size Chevy.

Thanks guys! I ordered the chebby booster from NAPA today and will let you know how it goes.
Now I'd like to find a way to power boost my '60 Lark. It's got Jim's disc set-up with a dual master, under the body, of course. How was power braking done then?

It's not the having, it's the getting.

Tom,

60 Larks (like mine) had the separate booster on the inner fender, like the Hawks did. The booster are available from Studebaker International.

Oops - almost forgot! The Hawk-type power booster is actually only for SINGLE master cylinders only!

Hey Tom,

Maybe the email didnt get through, but I sent this to you back in Dec
2008. Its regarding the Jeep/Dodge/Avanti booster :

Its been many years since we did the swap, as much as 15 years. I do
not remember the exact year, though I would assume 60's. What I see
online is that Jeep used a different booster in the mid 70's through
the 80s. I would bet it was late 60's model.

I found this picture on a Mopar site :

From this website :

https://www.jimsautoparts.com/brake.htm#power_brake_boosters

Which as you can see looks like a Stude booster. Using what we know
about the M/C, its a good guess to put the range at 63-75, or up to
the booster change that Jeep did. Dodge might be early 70's, or late
60's I would guess Jeep to be slower at swapping parts.

1967-1968 Dodge Polara - A1 Cardone Brake Booster :

FYI:
For anyone interested, I thought I would pass on the following information.
The power brake booster went out in my Avanti this past Summer. I searched around a bit and found a quality re-builder that had a fast turn-around time, did good work, and the price was really fair.
Consequently, I thought I should pass on my findings. Cost was 125.00 (plus core) and $16 UPS... total $141.00

The re-builder was:
MIDWEST REMANUFACTURING, LLC
5836 West 66th Street
Bedford Park, IL 60638
708+496-9100

They are located just South of Chicago's Midway Airport.

Hmm, looks like I'd be better off going back to my drum brakes on the '60.
Thanks!

Tom,

The aftermarket brake company ECI used to make a double remote power booster, but they don't seem to anymore. Now they only make the small boosters that fit under the floor behind the MC. Maybe one would work for you:

To expand on Jeff H's comment about firewall flex. I put a late model Camaro booster and master cylinder in my 54K. The firewall looked awful flexy, so I plug welded a 3/16" plate to the firewall that was contoured to fit from hood cowl area down to the floor. Plate width is 6" wide.

You can hit the brakes with both feet and nothing moves.

Tom, I hope you have the linkage for that booster as it's going to be kind of hard to connect to the pedal without it..

I bought a 62 Chevy booster and installed it too:

I had to use the brackets that came with the Chevy unit. I also had to drill holes in them to fit over 2 bolts on the firewall. The existing 4 holes in the bracket fit perfectly to the firewall. The Studebaker pivot also fit fine.

I'm having some issues with the pedal being to close to the firewall, but I think that is unrelated to the new booster.
