I also have an '84 Touring Coupe (#3872) with the stock 165 Hp (non-HO) GM 305 V8. I started having problems with my computer at a meet in Asheville and decided to spend the few bucks to get the engine book. Attached is a list of the GM codes I have. My "Computer Test Connector" is located under the dash between the hood release and the steering column. It is a black plastic row connector with 6 female connectors. It may have a plastic cover. The shorting adapter that came with the kit shorts out the last two connectors (on my car that matches to a white wire and a white wire with a black stripe. The same thing could be done with a paperclip (I bought the book for codes, not the adapter). The book says to follow these procedures: 1. Set parking brake, shift in PARK, block drive wheels, ignition OFF. 2. Test the "Check Engine" light by turning the key from OFF to ON but do not start the car. The light should come on. Turn the ignition key OFF. (If it doesn't come one, the manual refers you to a diagnostic circuit check. I'll assume it comes on.) 3. Have a pencil and paper ready to copy the codes. 4. Short out the two test connectors using either method above. 5. Turn the ignition key to ON but DO NOT START THE ENGINE. 6. Get the engine codes from the flashing "Check Engine" light. (The manual says that if the light does not flash, you have a problem which must be repaired before proceeding and again refers you to the diagnostic circuit check chart.) Each code will flash 3 times. Code 12 looks like FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH Code 23 looks like: FLASH FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH FLASH Ultimately, I had to replace the computer which had me scared. A friend let me borrow a spare one of his (talk about a true friend with just the right parts bin) and it solved my problem. I found that the computer was readily available at the local auto parts store and at a decent price. Ask for the 84 Camaro non-SHO or take your computer, which is located under the glove compartment, and they'll cross reference the number on the box. If you can't find it, let me know. I question the statement that no codes were being reported. If everything is working fine, the CHECK ENGINE light should flash once then twice indicating code "12" - everything normal. Let me know how things turn out. Ken Thomas 1984 Avanti Touring Coupe semper73@stsi.net
