I have a 1975 with a 350 SBC. I have dropped the oil pan without removing the engine. I removed the bolts on the front engine mount and jacked up the engine until the front of the trans was almost hitting the body. This was done very carefully. Then I blocked the engine up using wood jammed between the engine mounts and was able to remove the oil pan. I also used this method to get clearance to remove the pitman arm.
