Santa Monica, CA to Barstow, CA - 157 miles
We entered old Route 66 outside Victorville and proceeded to Barstow for the night
Dave and Nadine hosted a Hospitality Suite for the group
Some of us are learning and gassed up that afternoon, giving more wiggle room in the morning. We did some trinket shopping at a local market.

Departing Santa Monica, we waited til the morning rush hour(s) were over. Still a lot of fast traffic, lane changing, etc, but we made it thru to I 15 toward Barstow, in about an hour
Made a pit stop at "In-n-Out Burgers" on the recommendation of some club members. Good move!
The best restaurant in Santa Monica
Leaving the Hotel
Getting into the thick of it
Pit Stop
Larry's checking is car out
Thinks he has an engine temp problem
Starting the big climb eastward
Stopping at Cecil and Helens, in Victorville, for 'thanks' and farewell
At Victorville, the Johnsons and the Johnstones left the group to go to the post office to mail stuff home (to free up space in the cars). We, then, caught up with the group at Cecil's and Helen's where goodbyes were said. Cecil provided Paul with a Garrison Keilor CD (Paul had mentioned liking Garrison Keilor at the first visit). Frank and Faye stayed in Victorville for an emergency dental repair for Faye and the rest of us headed for Barstow. We got to the Quality Inn in Barstow early.
Exiting Victorville for points east.....
We stop for some roadside pics
Tonight, we stay in Barstow, CA and arrived at the motel around 3PM. Coming into town, I spotted a 52 Commander in a front yard. Barstow looked to be a small town with the usual compliment of strip malls and stores. Larry Merhaut had gone ahead and checked in before the rest of us. When we caught up with him, he mentioned that the fellow in the room next door asked if he'd like to use his truck to block anyone from "stealing his car". We got to wondering about this later in the afternoon and were strategizing about how we could line up the cars for protection.
Dinner was at the Idle Spurs a nice restaurant across the other side of town. Larry led us over there.
Paul and Karen went to visit a relative and showed up later
