The Avanti parts manual lists the water pump as 1560395 for all R 1,2,3,4 engines. I have a "new" or rebuilt pump that has the part number 1560400 cast into the front face. It has 3 cast neck supports and the weep hole at 4 or 8 o'clock depending on mounting position.
Is the 1560400 pump an improved design later version of the 1560395?
Any info appriciated.

That number #1560400 is the Avanti casting No. The HD casting No. is #527070 and the standard pump is #1554634 |

If you notice your Avanti 1560400 casting number pulley flange, has a center "nose" twice as long as a Std. pump.
I always wondered why the Avanti Viscous drive would require that long nose, but not the Air Cond. viscous drive Lark/Hawk or JT engined Super Lark/Hawk all with viscous drive oil filled fan clutch!
So what is so special about an Avanti with the same basic engine?

A heavy duty pump is needed with the heavy, cast iron 3 grove water pump pulley and the supercharger belt load.

I knew that John, it is pretty obvious. But did you know that the only diff. is the larger support boss with the 3 gussets? The bearing is exactly the same! Duh! Doesn't make sense to me, but still wonder why the long nose?

I compared a standard pump to a supercharged pump. The overall length is the same. With the front beariing moved out, reguiring the longer nose on the casting, it shortens the outside length of the shaft. Compare it to a rear axle where the outer bearing is close to the wheel. |

Sorry, should have explained why it's heavy duty, but I did not know about the bearing relocation.

On many of the R2 Avanti's the pump was replaced with a standard pump. After a few thousand miles the blower belt load would fatigue the pump shaft which would fail puting the fan into the radiator and tearing up the fan shroud. So don't ever use a standard pump on an R2 Avanti.

Replaced the water pump yesterday. What should have been an hour job turned into five but the bottom line is that the new pump is in place.
The old pump has the cast in part number 527070 (can anyone identify this part number?). It had no neck reinforcement. I checked the impeller hight because the impellers appeared different. They both measured .844 inches from the mounting flange face to the top of the impeller "blade". The service manual indictes that it should be .934 inches.
Think that the .09 inch varience will impact cooling? With the old pump, temps styed around 200 deg at speed in the summer.
