Avanti Steel rims, Stude or Avanti II - January 2002 //////Original Avanti rims are 15 X 5", not really designed for the wider tires of today with stiffer sidewalls, low profiles or radial ply construction. ///////// Mid 70's Chrysler Cordoba rims fit but do not have the same backspacing as the Avanti. Mid 80's Chrysler rims from a New Yorker with Disk Brakes will fit if you need to CLEAR the Turner Brake System Calipers The rims outlined below will also clear the Turner system Calipers: I recommend that you get new Ford 15 X 6 rims. Why buy another set of used rims that already have metal fatigue and rust? And if you get them at a junk yard, thaey are hard to match and you are never quite sure exactly what you are getting--I know, I learned the hard way. A set of 4 new ones will run you $120-$150. Go to any wheel and rim shop and they will have them. Better tire stores should have them also, or be able to order them. Here is the information on these rims copied from my website.(NWRA 40273 is the aftermarket name and #, though I suppose there are other brands also): "Here is how the Ford 15 X 6 NWRA 40273 rims compare to the Avanti rims. Offset from the center line of the rim: Avanti, 7/8"" and Ford 1/2". Bolt hole pattern is identical. Ford bolt holes are a little larger, and you may want to use the larger Ford nuts (they require a 13/16" socket rather than a 3/4" socket. Width between bead sealing surfaces:Avanti 4 1/2" (supposedly 5") and Ford 5 7/8" (officially it's a 6" rim). Weight: Avanti rims weigh about 16 lbs., the Ford rims about 21 lbs. The advantage of the greater weight is that the rim will flex less. But there is a slight disadvantage that may or may not be noticeable. The extra rim weight increases the "unsprung weight" at each spring by 5 lbs., and that will make bumps slightly more noticeable when you hit them, though I have to confess that I have not noticed a difference." Your wheel covers will fit just fine on these rims, and the only way that others might be able to tell that these are not stock Avanti rims is that the 205 radials will appear to fit on them better. The local company here in Grand Rapids, MI, WHEEL AND RIM SERVICE, ph. 616-459-8171. They also have a Detroit outlet, ph. 313-961-2400. You could either order from the rims from them or ask them where they get them, thus giving shops closer to you a clue as to where to get them. They assured me it was a standard item; they had them in stock and did not even have to order them. Just to make sure I had the correct number, I just dug out my receipt and it gives the product number as X-40273, and I remember they told me it was an NWRA number. In fact, I think it was stamped right on the rim as NWRA 40273. Perhaps the X was what your sources needed to make the number work. Let me know if this helps. BTW, I bought the rims for $34 each in October of 2000. I have these on my 59 Lark. The full wheel covers fit fine. The dog dish cover will not work. Henry ----------------- Any of the late 70's thru 89 Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, REAR WHEEL drive cars will work, Some are wider than others, I have used 85 5th Ave wheels, stock wheel covers. Work great with my front and rear disc kits! Jim Turner ------------- Many choices from 6" thru 7 1/2 or 8" (police cruisers) don't remember the width, do remember they were off an 85 5th Ave --------------- My 64 Cruiser has 5" Mopar rims with P205/75R15 tires installed by the previous owner, Don Shelton. They work great and look right. One thing you might want to think about before you go installing 6.5 or 7 inch rims, with, I assume, a wide radial tire, is that the chassis those meats will be feeding loads into was designed in 1939. Pretty spindly sticks for the loads you could develop with what you're planning.
