Interior - Transmisson tunnel heat - +++++++++++++++ My auto trans shift lever gets so hot that only the ball at top can be touched. If I touch the base that it comes up through and leave my finger there for a few seconds it feels hot enough to burn. I have plugged every hole through fire wall as best as possible, including making my own home made steering column gasket. But I still get plenty of heat at highway speeds. Is this normal? What can I do to increase air flow into and out of engine compartment and transmission tunnel? Was your comment about adding "factory fresh air flow" tongue and ------------ The later cars had a 'console cooling kit' (also available for early cars) that fed cool air from the vents to cool the console area. JP July 01 --------------- The later Avanti's have 4 1" in diameter holes drilled on each sid of the engine compartment to move the air out of it. These holes are about to inches in front of the hood latch and about 1 inch under the lip for the hood. jp July01 --------- Just so there is no confusion, when I said late, I meant 64, not the Avanti II's that had the added holes drilled. JP July 01 ---------- The grille in front of the windshield on later model 64'a and II's had a pair of 1 inch air intakes on the bottom of the tray to feed air into the passenger compartment. It had a square shroud on top to keep the rain out. On my 64 it was used for just that. On my 70, there were duct like flex hoses connected to the underside of the intake, under the dash, that ran down past the A/C and terminated inside the front part of the console. The purpose being to provide cool air and remove a lot of the heat that convects back fron the engine and radiates from the trans. It does do the job.....and the original flow isn't missed, since the sides of the tray under the grille force air down to the vents by the Drivers left foot and Passengers right foot. Rain water also dumps into the hog troughs at this point. BobJ ---------------- According to the parts manual, the ducts and hoses for transmission cooling appeared after serial number RQ4892. It shows the hoses and the routing to the console. Interestingly, the square shroud isn't shown or mentioned in the manual that I could find. ------------------ There are eight holes total, four on each side of the car drilled with a 1 1/2" hole saw. The first hole is 12" from the firewall along the inner fender, there is about 3/4" distance between the holes. The factory installed them on Denny Langs 1977. Denny sent this information to me in 1998, and I am just getting around to doing the job prior to going to Hot August Nights in Reno. I can scan pictures and send them to the group if anyone is interested after I cut the holes in my baby. I intend to make the job look professional and original if possible. don h ---------------- Their is a service letter about install a factory 'kit' on non AC early cars, but with a bit of work it can be added even with AC. You cut two holes in the floor of the vent, adding hose adapters and hoses. Poulos July 2001
