//////////////I am looking to cut the front coil springs on my 1955 commander and would like to know how much to cut off and still get a decent and safe ride.///// I don't know how much he could safely take off. Do the stock Stude springs have only one flat side? If so I would start with 1/2 coil off the other end, using a cutoff grinder not a torch. I actually had luck with my last Stude lowering by heating the coils but that is very tricky and they will continue to drop about one inch more as you drive it. He also could have some custom made springs that are shorter but heavier so it won't bottom out to much. 1 inch lower should be no problem at all and two inches a maybe. ----------- I cut 3/4 of a coil on my '54. I tried more than that on one set, but it made the car too low (is it true that "if it's too low, you're too old?" ). I cut the coils with a cut off wheel, then flattened the cut side of the coil similar to stock. The ride is fine. It made it a tad stiffer, but nicely so. Still plenty of travel. Mine has a SBC, so if the writer still has a Stude V8, he may want to take even less due to the weight difference. --------- I've driven my 54 Cpe with 1 1/2 coils cut out of the front springs for well over a decade. Yeah, I would have to agree that if you think its too low, then you're too old. I'm only 48 and I love the way the car drives and handles. It is a bit of a firmer ride than stock, but thats the way I like it. The 54 sports a warmed over R1 289 with a 4spd. My R1 GT is stock in the front end and I think its just a bit too mushy. But then again, I don't like the way the GT feels compared to the 54. The GT feels very heavy up front and I dont have much confidence around corners. The 54 is quite low and has the big 1 1/4 inch sway bar, so it takes corners very flat. Anyhoo, just my 2 cents worth. ------------ //////How do you make up for the screwed up caster with the front lowered? I've had Studes with sagging springs that you just plain did not have enough adjustment to bring back into spec. Did you just go with positive caster?//////// ---------
