Will not foul out and STAY that way like Champions and Autolites do. (Bezhawk) R2 - I use either Champion RJ12YC new number 91 or Autolite 85 plugs in the R series engines with good results. You can use a platinum plug if you want, I know that Bosch makes platinum plugs that correspond to the Champion and Autolite plugs, but I don't remember the number. If the engine doesn't burn oil, which could cause plug fouling, the platinum plugs are a good choice and worth the extra money. Bud (Bud) R2 - I use Autolite 437 in all of my Studebaker V8's including the 63 R2. (Jackson) (53K) R2 I would recommend being extremely careful when using the Autolite 437 or Champion H18Y plugs as they are meant for the lower compression engines with a mild cam. The use of a hotter than recommended plug under certain conditions could cause the tip of the plug to glow in the R series engines causing pre-ignition which can cause major engine damage. Bud (bud) R2 - The advantage to the platinum plugs is longer plug life and a lower voltage requirement to fire the plugs. These days everyone is using no lead gas so the lead fouling issue is gone and as long as the engine is in good condition and the carburetor is jetted correctly, the platinum plugs have an advantage over the standard plugs. In my own cars, I use the standard plugs because I have a good supply of Autolite 85's for the Avanti and a bunch of the old Autolite AL 52 plugs for my Hawk and girlfriend's Lark. Bud (bud)
