Oct 2005 ------------- My 64 has a 289 crate engine. Someone told me that Studebaker usually used the cloverleaf engine for their crate engines. According to my friend, they were built a little more study than stock engines. How can I find the cloverleaf mark on my engine, if it is a cloverleaf? //// ---------------------- It will be stamped where the regular serial number would have been, look at the top of the block just to the front of the valley cover and to the right of the block-off plate for the oil filler stack. nate -------------------- STANDARD replacement short/long blocks wouldnt have a coverleaf. ONLY heavy duty replacements would have it and it would be on the machined serial number pad. Maybe some DEALERS only used heavy duty replacements but Studebaker catalogued both. This applies regardless of cid. Transtar60 -------------------- Interesting - but what constitutes 'heavy duty'? What are the differences? I have a cloverleaf motor in the Wagonaire, and as it's being rebuilt I'd like to know what to pay attention to. ---------------- I *think* that the HD engines have the valve rotators while the regular engines do not. not sure if there are any other differences or not. nate --------------------- Its not detailed in the car parts book, it doesn't even mention heavy duty engines or cloverleafs but the truck book does: "These engines and blocks are equipped with heavy duty main and connecting rod bearings and chrome faced top piston rings. Parts # 1686288 (259) and 1687546 (289) also include aluminum camshaft gear. NOTE--Al heavy duty engines can be identified by the clover leaf symbol stamped on the engine number pad." From Page 16 , last paragraph Studebaker Trucks Parts book 57-61. So it would seem all cloverleaf engines are heavy duty truck engines either OEM or NOS replacement. I'm still trying to remember what the "keystone" symbol means on the engines. ------------- My Studebaker mechanic, some of you know him as Dan Miller, confirms that the cloverleaf was a truck engine, had the heavy duty parts listed in your replies, and had the rotating valves which he says all engines should have. I was told the engine, which was replaced many years ago after a wreck, was a crate 289. The engine number is: 1554641. There is a "2" above that number. There is no cloverleaf which means it is not a cloverleaf. ------------------ No - Man, that's the casting number. What you're looking for is on a machined pad on the other (driver's) side of the engine. jack -------------------- According to the 57-61 truck parts book, the cloverleaf indicates that it is a heavy duty engine, which usually meant it had the tri-metal bearings, among other heavy duty innards. Andrew Beckman --------------------- I think the heavy duty equipment also included the #683875 exhaust valves and #1685777 aluminium camshaft timing gear. Mark --------------------- The cloverleaf usually designated a heavy duty engine - heavy duty (usually Clevite 77) bearings, aluminum timing gear, heavy duty valves, sometimes valve rotators, etc. The truck parts books describe the heavy duty engine. Paul ----------------------- They (valve rotators) are also referred to as "roto caps" and are the items that go on top of the valve springs and are locked in by the two piece inserts to the valve stem. They have three, (I believe), springs that rotate the valves at a fixed rate. -------------------- Correct, the cloverleaf was the heavy duty engine with various upgrades including: chrome plated piston ring, H.D. inlet and exhaust valves, exhaust valve rotary caps, H.D. trimetal main bearings (2,3,4), trimetal connecting rod bearings, and for my 58 3E13 a 1 qt oil bath air cleaner. The mark that I am asking about is a squared off shaped arrow head or keystone. I am wondering if it has something to do with bearing size or clearance. Some tractor makers used to stamp bearing undersize (?) on the engine, ------------------------- Its not detailed in the car parts book, it doesn't even mention heavy duty engines or cloverleafs but the truck book does: "These engines and blocks are equipped with heavy duty main and connecting rod bearings and chrome faced top piston rings. ------------------ As far as I know the cloverleaf engines were checked to be used as R series engine blocks for uniformity of wall thickness and other blueprint specs but were used for replacement HD engine blocks if you ordered one. My brother has one that has other HD parts but I could not tell you if it came that way. ------------------- Keystone Symbol -------------- Still would like to know what the symbol above the engine serial # means. Like I said it is a keystone type symbol, it is not the cloverleaf, I am familiar with that as my 1 ton truck has that engine with the 5E prefix This motor is serial number V522067. The symbol is an upside down keystone or square looking arrow head with a 6 in it. I wonder if it is an engine rebuilders mark? ///////////// ---------------- Keystone marks were used on R3 blocks but I don't think it has anything to do with them being R3. This R3 block I have has a keystone with an 8 in it both at the front and rear of the block. -- ---------------- The engine in my car actually has a keystone stamped under where the oil filler block-off plate screws on. Would have never seen it had I not gone to install my shiny finned aluminum stuff. nate -----------------------
