Aug 2005 ----------------------------- Flight 0 Matic - problems --------------- ////The tranny in my 60 Hawk doesn't shift right. In normal driving its OK,except theres no kick down, gear reduction for passing. Also,by starting out in L and switching to high thers a definite slip where the tach jumps, but the tranny dosen't shift right away as it should. Also if you floor it in drive the same thing occurs,a very quick shift to high then what seems like a moments slippage. Would a fluid change help? Seems to me there must be some adjustments needed./////// ================================================= Fluid Checking - hot,in drive, after going through all the gears. ---------------------------------------------- Sounds like the throttle-to-transmission linkage need adjusting (assuming the fluid level is ok). I can never remember which way to turn it, but moving it a few turns will definitely affect the shifting (tighter, quicker shifts and no slipping plus you should get your kickdown back). The Shop Manual details measuring pressure to set it correctly, but I think most people use the "seat of the pants" system. Paul Johnson --------------------------------------------- Second that. I'm not sure about the BW trannys but a lot of trannys use the throttle pressure linkage to adjust shift quality as well as shift points. A fluid change and band adjustment probably wouldn't hurt as well. If the throttle pressure linkage is out of adjustment you definitely won't get passing gear kickdown. I would adjust so it upshifts at normal acceleration at about 30 MPH or so and then see if you have passing gear, if you do then see how the shift quality is and if it's still bad do a band adjustment. Sounds like you need to *shorten* the linkage, FWIW. Follow the whole setup procedure in the shop manual from the carb. back. Are you using an Edelbrock? If you are the linkage *needs* to be in the big hole for the adjustment to work correctly otherwise the tranny will never see "full throttle." The hole that is about the right size is too close to the shaft, it shortens the pedal travel. Goes without saying that you should be using the spring loaded throttle linkage. good luck nate -------------------------------- Shorten the length of the rod for a later upshift. Also, sounds like a band adjustment is in order.. JT ------------------------------------- you ARE checking the fluid BY THE BOOK? COLD, its WAY above the full mark.. ==================== April 2008 dynolou2 Starlight Member With a transmission pressure gauge hooked up to the line pressure port on the trans. With engine and trans warmed up place selecter in D operate engine at 1000 RPM with the rear wheels held stationary by the foot brake . Adjust the bellcrank to throttle valve lever rod to obtain 80 to 85 psi, replace 1/8 pipe plug and test drive. Lou Cote Found the sun today -------- bkz81 Cruiser Member I dont' believe there is a pressure port on my flightomatic. ---------- dynolou2 Starlight Member Well before I went any further ,obtaining a shop manual would be a great help. Pressure tap plugs could be found in two locations, on my 62 Hawk it is on the left side of the case just in front of the manual/TV valve levers. On some of the later flightomatics it is located at the back of the case just above the oil pan. To be a little clearer you're looking for a 7/16 pipe plug. For shop manuals either Studebaker International or Faxon Literature {on ebay} should have what you need. Lou Cote -----------
