Lester Motors Studebaker

Description	Taken in 1944, this photograph shows Lester Motors Studebaker,
 located at 1301 K Street. At the time of the photograph, Lester – founded by
 Edward "Ted" Lester – was the northern California distributor of Studebaker 
cars. With World War II raging and no new cars being built and few being sold,
 Lester super-converted his showroom into a warehouse for variety merchandise,
 from battery chargers to preserved dates to glow-in-the-dark dolls. The 
business's new name was Lester's Appliance and Home Supplies. An additional
 motivation for Lester's conversion was the desire to keep his staff employed. 
The company still offered automobile servicing and retained an inventory of 
300 new Studebakers for anyone qualified to buy. During the War, Lester was 
chairman of Sacramento's "Salvage for Victory" campaign.
