From: Cheap Avanti II ($3500) I took the afternoon off to check out a 1970 Avanti II, but it's not the car for me at the asking price. I don't see a way for me to make it a beater driver and come out right side up, and I'm not interested in parting it out. A new owner would have two possible options, make it a driver, or part it. Here's the good, the bad and the ugly. The Good: Nice frame and hog troughs. It runs after a shot of either and a jump start, some blue smoke, but might clear up. Decent chrome, with the exception of the driver side, front bumper end and typical aging. Glass is good, windows go up and down. The bad: The paint and body is 40 foot quality.( cracks in the fiberglass, tired paint) The car appears to have 150,000 miles on it, and I did not drive it since the two front tires have disintegrated, the rears are also old but holding air. Weatherstripping is shot, so the interior is moldy, trunk carpet is bad, so is the latch. The Ugly: The interior is shot, drivers seat is flopping on a 2x4 board mount, gage bezels are rusty, steering wheel cracked and the dash pad is really rough. The rear bumper looks like it was hung on the back to transport it, it just flops around. Here's the two possibilities: Make it a beater driver: Buy 4 tires and a battery $ $400 Patch up the interior with junk yard seats, headliner, roll bar cover, new carpet and some new vinyl. $1000 (better than 4K or more to do it right), but live with the bad dash pad, weak paint and rusty gages. Budget maybe $500 or so take care of the brakes and odds and ends. Get rid of the rear bumper, buff out the paint and call it done. That would net you a $5500 beater plus shipping if there are no surprises. Part it out: You might get $5000 for all the parts, but factor in your labor and a few months of finding buyers and time to box and ship. The body and chassis is about all the Studebaker stuff in the car, but the Vette engine should bring a few bucks. Contact me if you are interested, and I'll hook you up with the owner, but note, he is firm on the price and already turned me down on any offers, although I left him my number. All of the above is just my opinion, you might spend more or less than my estimates. I would hope someone would save the car and prove my "nothing more expensive" line wrong, or just wants to get in a Avanti real cheap, even if they spend more in the end.
