R1687 has a history as all Avanti's have it is a revived Total. I found the rear half of the car tied to a shipping pallet in a junk yard in the Nevada desert. The front half of the chassis had been cut off and tossed onto the back seat. The fire wall had been crushed. It started out Gold, R1, auto, PW and AC, shipped to Redondo Beach, California and during it's early life repainted red. The interior was originally Fawn and had been sprayed black. I had to replace the frame and all of the fiberglass from the firewall forward. I found an R2 engine with low mileage, a complete set of R3 bolt-ons was added. I converted the drive train to 4 speed with a factory built Avanti/ Hurst shifter I also added a twin traction unit to the 3.31 rear end. I found several totaled Avanti's during the reconstruction that all donated important parts. In 1975 I had the dash board custom built by Avanti for the car, as were the front seats and door panels. The car also has an early 70's tilt steering column and a dual master cylinder. After a major traffic accident on the freeway, the car lost the front end to nearly the condition as I origanally found found the car and major rear end damage as well. The car was repaired with a square headlight front end with all new factory fiberglass panels. The current color is Black. The car is fitted with the original wheels from my brothers Avanti #1025. They are very early 15 x 6 Keystones custom made for the Granatelli car. They were modified to accommodate the disc brakes, the tires are 1964/5 era Goodyear Speedway Bluestreaks. The car is in the process of being re-powered with a 100% original R3 engine serial number B110. Since there are so many R3 look-a-likes this R3 will be dual AFB carbs with a single supercharger.
