You are viewing a privately owned 1964 Studebaker Avanti. Classic Cars Online is helping the owner with the presentation and listing of this vehicle. You will be purchasing this vehicle directly from him. The current owner purchased this vehicle in 1978 from the local Avanti dealer in Cleveland, Ohio. (32 years ago.) It has been in storage for the last few years. The vehicle is running and is drivable at this time. With any classic vehicle, the main concern are the "Numbers". This is a "Matching Number" vehicle that still has the original Avanti 289 cu. in. engine with only 45K miles. The block casting number is: "1554641" with a stamp code of: "RJ309". "RJ309" stands for "R" = Avanti 289, "J" = September, "3" = 1963, "09" = 9th. (Sept. 9th, 1963) See the close up photos of all these important numbers in the photo gallery below. The body tag on the right fender reads "RQ4161". The VIN tag is mounted on the frame on the right side of the engine compartment ahead of the firewall. It reads "R-5256". Unit "5256" was built sometime in September of 1963 as a 1964 model. This is a very rare vehicle. Only 795 of these 1964 model were produced before Studebaker stopped production at their South Bend plant in December of 1963. The carburetor was just rebuilt and works fine. The engine runs very well with no known problems. The paint and fiberglass body are in good shape. Not perfect but very respectable. The chrome bumpers look to be still original and are in pretty nice condition. A few of the rubber pieces on the bumpers do show some wear/cracks. The rest of the chrome items such as the moldings, door handles, mirrors, and emblems all look good without any pitting. The four 78 series tires are Polyester with white walls. These tires are mounted on chrome wire rims. The black interior is all stock and most likely all original also. It is in nice shape with no visible rips, holes, or cracks. The vinyl door panels are in good shape. The interior like the rest of the car could use a good detailing. Remember, it was just removed from storage. The driver's side door metal sill panel does have some corrosion. The white factory headliner with the square pattern is in very good condition. All of the glass is in nice shape without any cracks, chips, or scratches. The trunk area still looks to be all original. It has the correct carpet and spare tire board cover. It does have a spare tire, but it does not match the four other tires on the car. Under the hood is the original Avanti 289 cu. in. V8 engine. It has power brakes, power steering, the correct air cleaner and the correct stainless steel shielding over the distributor/wires. It looks to still have all the correct items including the chrome valve covers. At one time, the undercarriage received some sort of black undercoating. Some of that undercoating is starting to come off. It wouldn't take much to pressure wash the underside and clean most of this area. It does have a dual exhaust system that is O.K. with the only exception being one of the mufflers. That muffler has a small hole in it. The vehicle has been in storage for a few years. The car is running and is drivable. Someone may want to go over the vehicle and make sure everything is working correctly before attempting any long trips. It could use a little cleaning and detailing to make it really pop. The vehicle is not perfect, but it is great if someone wants to take it to the next level. A true collector vehicle! The current owner is an older gentleman that has several vehicles in his collection. He is selling this vehicle along with a few others to make his relocation down south go easier.
