That is ironic. I kept loosing the little C clips and it became easier to "unspin" the wire for adjustments. That is the longest wastegate arm I have ever seen on a gate. Shocked

Dan, one unit was shipped out this evening. The other will go out around Wednesday.

Today I picked up the motor mount. Communication error. Other mount and trans mount will be here tomorrow. The mount I am using is an Energy Suspension part number 2.1102G. It is listed as a Jeep and Universal mount. It is a polyurethane mount with interlocking metal plates to prevent the dredded mount separation if it fails. I chose this mount because I wanted to stay with a drop down mount. I have always liked the engine mount plate to set on top of the mount instead of working at an angle. That way I don't have to worry about motor mount sag as the mount gets a work out. Here's a picture of the mount.

The poly construction is something I prefer in certain instances. Motor mounts is one of them. I don't like solid steel mounts. Although strong I have seen blocks damaged by them. I don't like rubber mounts like the OEM as they have a limited life span and are easily damaged by oil and fuel. So tomorrow I plan to do a rough mock up of the frame plates and these mounts so that I can finalize the engine plates in the near future. Look for pictures tomorrow night.

Need to find time to go and get the two motors from Lompoc Tom and then I plan to take them to my work shop in Santa Maria to start checking them out. Figured I could use one of the seatrain containers to do the work out of the elements. Once I figure out if one of the engines will work I can transport it to Morro Bay for install in the Avanti. If that doesn't work out then Alan has the block you saw pictured and who knows what else is out there. Look for pictures next week of the first turbo mock up.

Karl,
I think Tom Covington is looking to make aobut 350HP. That is with the 259 and twin turbos set at about 10-12 psi boost. I'm all about saving time and money. What do you have in mind. If you want to share directly you can e mail me here.

Yeah Tom, what you're looking at there is a stock TD05 off of a second gen Eclipse. From what I was told the power from the one side of the V8 will be spot on at midrange. But anyway, the design of the exhaust side of the wastegate of the turbo and the mounting point of the vacuum module? on the compressor, provides for a very long wastegate arm. From looking at the photo, yeah they designed is so mechanics of the wastegate of the turbo are literally at opposite ends of the compressor. Well, as long as it works like it should.... Wink Cool

My thought is to let you use the motor out of the Twin.
Its ready now. Wink No need to buy any thing. Its got Crower rods, J&E pistons,Total Rings, Fresh bearings. heads are new. but not sure if you want to run the R4 intake set up vs a single four.
its here if you need it.Karl

Karl,
That is some offer. I'm not sure how to respond. But let me ask you this. Is the engine turbo friendly, low compression or high? Not wanting to slight Tom C. He has been working hard for a month now to help me get something together for El Mirage. And he is willing to fly out to tune it ect. Could we use the dual quads and low boost? Or Tom's single four and manifold set up for boost. Just testing the waters here. What about oiling system? So help me out here. Can this work together and get things done. This would save a lot of time and money and take the guess work out of the equation. So Tom please weigh in. And Karl share your thoughts too.

In Awe Dan

Congradulations Don!!! Very Happy No slight here on my end. This solves the time constraint, logistics, and engine preparation problem. I am happy for you and my hat is off to Karl for stepping up to the plate and hitting a home run for the project. It don't get no better than this. Go for it!

Tom,
Thank you. I'm glad you are happy for me but I can't help but feel disappointed for you. These last few weeks you have been bust'n your tail to find something that would make things work. Thank you for caring and for the work you did.

Last night after I posted my reply I decided to see if I could find out what Karl was offering me. I have read so many posts and have been so locked into the project I didn't put two and two together. So I went looking for posts by Karl. What I found late last night (actually early this morning) was a shocker. I had no idea that Karl and the building of the twin were the same. So I didn't sleep real well and I'm up early feeling a lot like I did the morning after I read the post from Chuck offering me the Burke Avanti. Can you imagine the Burke Avanti and the Twin combined. A Studebaker lovers dream come true and the photo opportunity of a lifetime.

I will contact Karl and work out the details and keep everyone up to date as this new developement unfolds. As Tom said Karl just hit a home run. No, a Grand Slam. I look forward to working with Karl from now till El Mirage.

Just trying to do my part. Your work with Tom C. is still very much needed for the turbo in stall and tune Wink Tom may have a cam that will work better with turbos. Know they need different profiles. Smile I talked to my engine shop friend. (also a LSR both El mirage and Bonv) Said the Oil system would be ok.Compression on my old motor was 9:1 will be about 8.7-8.8 now because of additional material removed from combustion chamber. running a water & ice intercooler would just make it work better.(somehthing Iv'e been looking into) Wink

Hey Everyone,

If you have been following the last couple of posts you know that things have taken a dramatic turn for the better. Karl, owner of the "Twin" Avanti has offered me the use of the Twins engine for El Mirage. Now picture the engine bay filled with a twin Paxton Studebaker engine. This generous offer has taken a tremendous burden off of me and my team. We can now concentrate on getting the car ready and safe. And of course raising the money to pay for the safety equipment and other improvements needed. The rotisserie is ready for adaption to the body so that the frame can be repaired, cleaned and sealed. The car will be making a trip next door for motor mount set up. Then I'll call a work day and see how many of the people who said they wanted to help show up. Getting the underbody work done will be a big step in making the car race ready. Man this is awesome.

My wife and I had a little time to work on the car today. Eddie had an engagement and closed shop early. Kathy showed how easy it is to repair fiberglass with Kent products. She made the repairs to the hood scoop. Sanded, cleaned and repaired. Next she will apply the mat material to the underside and glaze the low spots and sand the underside of the hood. Then it will go to Otis Auto Body for a coat of white paint. That way it will be ready for the signatures of the people who give a gift to support the project. That way their signature will fly down the salt with me. Here's the pics of Kathy at work.

Man that is some work. Only thing better is when she has a power tool in her hands. She is one woman who doesn't mind getting dirty and loves working on project cars with me. She is already busy designing the new seat cover and pad for the car. I worked on the motor mounts. Here are some pics.

How do you like the cool Studebaker "S" cut into the gusset. That was a gift from my buddy Pat King of High Gear Ranch in Paso Robles. I didn't expect that and it is a cool touch. I like the first shot of the frame plate with the car in the background. I have to get the car on level ground before I can go any further with the mounts but they are going to look sharp and work like a charm. I had Kathy take a picture of the interior with the sheet metal removed from the right side and back right panel. Great and easy access to the distrbutor and anything else at the back of the engine. Great design. Thank you Bill Burke.
Here's a pic of Otis's sign.

More to come.

Hi Dan,

Don't know if you've already seen the posts since you've been working away on the build, but over on the SDC Forum Richard Quinn has been reproducing some Bonneville specific Studebaker posters.

They might be cool display/promotional items to put out at shows to help market your LSR efforts.

S2DBaker,
Thanks for the tip. I will see about getting copies for events. Maybe I can pick them up at the Studebaker Drivers Meet at the Petersen Museum next month. We will have the Twin engine sitting in the bay at the show. Going to try and include a lunch Saturday with Andy Granatelli and my dad. I want to get Andy to sign the dog house. Along with Bill Burke, Steve Burke and Mike Cooke. So look for more soon.

Today I picked up the other engine mount and the trans mount. It is the same one that Karl is using on the twin. Here are some pictures.

Just a word to the wise or consider it a reminder. Never use the lock washers provided in the kit. In fact I recommend you "Never" use a split type lock washer. It is impossible to get a true torque setting with them. Use Lock-Tite or if it is something that really gets a lot of vibration then use the new Shure Lock self locking washers. The plate has to be used since it sets the preload on the mount for long life and minimal vibration transfer. The frame plates serve as my pre load washers on the motor mounts. To get more information on the trickest lock washers ever invented go to:
Kent-Automotive.com
Click on Products. Click on Browse our catalog. Type in part number 58094 which is a 3/8" version of the washer. For a little more info click on the part number below the picture. That's it for tonights installment.

I have a fiberglass hood that the inner spider separated from the out skin
in an accident. I need to bond the two back together, and fix some slight
damage to the front pass corner. Any product recommendations?

I drooled over Karl's engine bay at the South Bend meet in '07. I couldn't be more excited about how things are working out for you. I check in here a couple times a day just to see what's new. I just wish I had some Avanti parts I could donate. Very Happy

Tom,

I would recommend the Chem Weld 15 we are using on the Burke car. We are doing the exact same reapir on the hood for the car. I can set you up with one of my Santa Barbara customers so that you can have them order it for you. I will contact you by e mail with all the info.

Matthew,

I had seen those videos but did not know they were Karl's car. WOW. I wish I had some stainless that needed work so I could send it to you. But the Avanti only has stainless around the windows and it's straight and clean. But I appreciate your support and enthusiasm. Here's a shot of the engine Karl sent to me.

So keep looking and more tonight. I have some time to work on it today.

PostPosted: Fri Feb 19, 2010 6:23 am    Post subject: Good News Reply with quote

Karl,

That's good news. I sure wish I was going to be there tomorrow to help pull the engine. Man I can't wait till I get my truck running. Having to rely on others is no fun. They all have lives too. Let me know how things go.

Well I worked on the car today for a little while. I got the trans mount installed.

Found out that the frame work above the engine is really stout. Much stronger than I thought it would be. So I rigged a better way to hold the engine in place. I didn't want to move the car with just the wood blocks holding it.

Next I took a piece of heat flexible heat tube and checked the routing of the headers. In so doing I figured out what the purpose of the two studs on the frame. They are the attaching points for the support strap for the zoomies. And to think at one time I contemplated cutting them off. Now I think three times before doing anything.

[IMG]https://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p56/dieselguy2006/Avanti%20Work%20Day%202-18[IMG]

Next I replaced both rear axle seals. The left one had been leaking. Got the right seals this time. Took a picture for reference.

Then I moved inside to measure the seating area. Under the new rules the car has to have head restraints in or on the seat with a maximum of two inches of movement. I'm trying to figure out if I can install a modern seat without making irreversible changes. Will hit the books tonight to see if that can happen.

Then for the first time in a month the car was back on the ground. Man it looks menacing. It has attracted a lot of attention. And it's in the back of the shop. Wait until tomorrow when it's inside.

Then I took some reference measurements to prepare for tomorows move inside to level ground. The headers will have enough clearance since there is less than an inch in total suspension travel in front. Again I used the flex pipe to see how the zoomies will exit using the two studs as my guide.

It was then that I noticed that the oil pan was really low. How low. Try two inches from the ground. Not to worry as the engine is currently set at below level to the frame. Tomorrow I will recheck after the engine is set for manifold level.

So all in all a good day. Wish I was going to Modesto tomorrow but plan to make it there early next week. Can't wait to see the Twin up close. Looking forward to meeting Karl in person. Sure like his work. And his generosity ain't bad either LOL. So that's it for now. Hope I didn't bore you with too much detail. Sorry about the picture quality on the outdoor shots. I haven't learned how to change the setting for foggy days. That's why I take the wife with me most days. She has the good camera and she even knows how to use it.

Karl,

Are you loaning the entire driveline, engine and trans? Did you get your
Giblin adapter in and your TKO-600? Just curious if you solved Dans trans
problem also. I wouldnt use a TR-3650 with the Twin.

WOW!!! WHAT an honor! For myself, I can't thank you enough for such an unselfish act, Dan. It sure wasn't necessary, but I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. My first humble thanks is for/from the forums "hardware"operator. As a humble member of this community, thanks for recognizing what an outstanding bunch of people we have. It just does NOT get ANY better!!!

PostPosted: Sat Feb 20, 2010 7:15 am    Post subject: The lettering almost finished Reply with quote

Well today was a good day but not without a set back. My pastor friend Kevin came by today and did most of the lettering on the car. He hand painted the whole thing and now the car really looks like a race car. As if it didn't before. I tried to make the lettering help tell the story when I designed it. So now people looking at the car will get a sense of what is happening or in the very least be curious and ask questions about the project.

Here are some pictures of the lettering that has been applied.

Kevin just has to add the lettering for Eddie's Custom Cars on the front fenders.
Now for the other news. I spoke to the guy from the company (The Car Twirler) that makes the rotisserie about putting the Avanti on it. He said that it will fit and be safely within the weight capacity. He told me that all fiberglass vehicles have to be put on with the frame or you have to buy the aluminum replacement frame for $1300. Otherwise the body will flex and stress cracks will show up everywhere. So now it's time to build the adapters to mate the car to the rig.

That's when I found a problem. When you grap hold of the bumper brackets in front and lift up they flex real bad. So I raised the car and flexed the brackets and watched what was moving. The frame flexs at the spring tower. It seems when the straight axle was installed they didn't care about the flex as they must have figured that the load was always downward. But since we need the frame to go up or down I am going to have to install so gussets to make the frame solid enough to support the body weight on the rotisserie. I also found a crack in the cross member that I am sure I would have found when we do the frame inspection and repairs. So more work but it will so be worth it when the car gets flipped on it's side to do the frame work and prep the underbody. So look for a frame repair and then rotisserie mount soon. The guy at the Car Twirler wants photos of the Avanti on the rotisserie and would like (if they're good) to use them for marketing purposes. I wonder if I can get some sponsorship money out of this? So lots more to come.
