Up for sale is a
great1975 Avanti II. This is the car built by Nathan D. Altman, a
former Studebaker dealer, who bought six buildings in the old
Studebaker complex in South Bend, Indiana, as well as all the tooling
and body molds to produce the Avanti, and hired mostly ex-Studebaker
employees. From 1966, through 1986 the South Bend plant produced
the original Studebaker chassis, body and interior, and installed Chevy
small block V8s and GM transmissions. These were hand-built cars,
and show superior fit and finish to other cars of the era.
The Avanti was the first U.S. production automobile with standard
front disk brakes. Positraction was also a standard
feature. This Avanti has a 400cid Chevy V8, which was rebuilt in
2005, and still has 3 years left on a 5 year warranty. The car
features true dual exhaust, and a larger 2 1/2 inch exhaust manifold
for better breathing (the original manifolds will also come with
the car). The transmission is a GM 700R4 transmission; unlike most
Avantis this one has an overdrive gear, which allows for better gas
mileage, and much quieter cruising at highway speeds. Quick
steering arms have been installed for better turning. The car is
wearing alloy wheels, and Bridgestone Potenza tires (the original,
narrower steel wheels and wheel covers will also be included).
Driving lights have been installed. The original build sheet will
be included also.
This is a great car, in top mechanical condition, and will make a
great driver, or can easily be restored to a show car. The
chassis and hog troughs are in great shape, everything works, except
the deicer, and the air conditioning has leaky hoses and needs
recharging. I have replacement hoses, but have never got around
to having them installed. The vinyl and cloth interior is in tip
top shape, apart from a small crack in the vinyl on the drivers seat,
and a couple of very small, sun damage cracks on the dash. The
power window motors have both been recently serviced. All of
the gauges work, except the dash clock. The radio is the
Blaupunkt AM/FM that came with the car. The only thing this car
really needs is new paint; it still has its original steel city gray
paint, but it is chipped in a few places, and shows cracking in other
areas. Underneath, the fiberglass body is undamaged, and will
look great when repainted. This is a car that turns peoples'
heads.
